Cattle Fattening
Our cattle fattening program is designed for efficiency and rapid turnaround:
- Intensive Feeding: Cattle are intensively fed for approximately 3-5 months to reach slaughter weight. Each feedlot cow consumes roughly 25 kg of forage and concentrates daily. Our feed regimen includes a combination of on-site Napier grass and brachiaria, along with purchased feed concentrates such as maize bran and minerals.
- Weight Gain & Profitability: A thin young bull bought at around UGX 400,000 can achieve a sale value of UGX 800,000-1,000,000 after intensive feeding. This translates to a significant profit margin of UGX 250,000-300,000 per cow after 3-5 months of feedlotting. With improved efficiency and potentially heavier finish weights in later phases, the average sale price can rise to UGX 1.3 million per animal.
- Zero-Grazing and Controlled Grazing: As our operations intensify, animals will spend more time in pens for “zero-grazing,” where feed is brought to them. This maximizes output per acre by efficiently converting biomass into meat.
Goat Fattening
Our goat fattening strategy complements our breeding program, focusing on efficient growth for market:
- Targeting Young Males: We primarily focus on fattening surplus young male goats, which are sold at 4-8 months old once they reach 20-25 kg.
- Feed Supplements: While goats largely forage on paddocks, they receive modest supplements, including salt licks and occasional purchased hay or bran, especially during dry seasons, to support healthy growth.
- Improved Breeds: Utilizing improved meat breeds like Savannah/Boer crosses significantly boosts growth rates, allowing them to reach 20-30 kg live weight in just 5-6 months and fetch higher prices, sometimes up to UGX 300,000 per animal.
- Sales Volume: W plan to sell approximately 200 goats per year, contributing significantly to our revenue projections.
Feed Management and Monitoring
Feed is our largest operational expense, so efficient management is crucial. We constantly monitor feed consumption and weight gain per animal using a basic farm management system. This data allows us to adjust rations, improve feed conversion ratios, and ensure that our animals are gaining weight efficiently, directly impacting our profitability. Investing in feed processing equipment like chaff cutters helps to reduce feed waste and improve digestibility.
