Breeding Programs

At Bazigoni Livestock & Produce Farm, our breeding programs are meticulously designed to ensure herd growth, genetic improvement, and consistent production of high-quality livestock. We focus on both cattle and goats, leveraging natural reproduction and strategic introductions of superior genetics.

Goat Breeding Program

Goats are renowned for their prolific reproduction, and our program capitalizes on this inherent advantage:

High Reproduction Rates

Our goats typically kid three times in two years, with many does producing twins or even triplets. This allows for rapid population growth, enabling us to sustain sales while continuously expanding our breeding stock.

Herd Growth

From an initial herd of 300 goats (primarily females), our population can increase significantly, reaching over 500 by the end of Phase 2, even after selective sales.

Genetic Improvement

We aim to enhance the quality of our goat meat production by utilizing improved meat breeds. This includes using superior breeding bucks, such as Boer or Savannah crosses, which are known to boost growth rates and increase market value due to their faster weight gain (20-30 kg live weight in 5-6 months) and desirable carcass characteristics.

Record-Keeping

Essential to our breeding success is diligent record-keeping. We track kidding schedules, offspring survival rates, and individual animal performance to inform breeding decisions and ensure the ongoing health and productivity of our herd.

Cattle Breeding Program

For our cattle, the breeding program is geared towards maintaining a healthy breeding stock and producing calves for our fattening operations

Herd Maintenance and Expansion

While a portion of our cattle is fattened and sold, a significant number of female heifers and cows are retained for breeding purposes to ensure continuous herd growth through internal breeding.

Strategic Purchases

To accelerate herd expansion and maintain optimal numbers for fattening (e.g., reaching 150 head quickly in Phase 2), we may purchase additional young cattle (steers) from local suppliers or markets. These purchases are considered strategic reinvestments into the farm's growth

Health and Fertility Monitoring:

Our veterinary program includes measures to ensure the reproductive health of our cattle. We monitor breeding cycles and provide necessary care to support successful calving

Weight Gain Tracking:

Although primarily focused on fattening, tracking weight gain from birth helps us assess the genetic potential of our breeding stock and informs future breeding selections.

Our comprehensive breeding programs are vital for sustaining our operations, driving profitability, and ensuring a consistent supply of quality livestock to the market.

Established in 2025, Bazigoni Livestock & Produce Farm was founded with a vision to revolutionize Uganda’s agricultural sector through sustainable, high-volume livestock production.
